今回の薬局英会話講座は 第10回「ジェネリック医薬品について説明する（Explaining Generic Medicines）」 です。
「ジェネリックにされますか？」——日本の薬局では毎日使うひと言ですが、英語で説明するとなると少しハードルが高いですよね。
「どうして安いの？」「効き目は同じ？」といった患者さんの疑問にもきちんと答えられるよう、実際の薬局で使える英語表現を練習しましょう。
👩⚕️ スタッフ側の基本フレーズ
① “Would you like to try the generic version?”
👉「ジェネリック医薬品にされますか？」
🔸 “generic (drug / version)” = 後発医薬品。海外でも一般的に通じる言葉です。
② “It has the same active ingredient as the brand-name medicine.”
👉「先発医薬品と同じ有効成分が入っています」
🔸 “active ingredient” = 有効成分。“brand-name medicine” = 先発医薬品。
③ “It works the same way, but it costs less.”
👉「効き方は同じですが、お値段が安くなります」
🔸 “cost less” = より安い。“cheap” は「安っぽい」印象を与えることがあるので避けるのが無難です。
④ “The shape and color may be a little different.”
👉「形や色が少し違うことがあります」
🔸 患者さんが「違う薬が出た！」と不安にならないよう、先にお伝えしておくと安心です。
⑤ “If you prefer the original one, that’s no problem at all.”
👉「先発品のほうがよろしければ、まったく問題ありませんよ」
🔸 選択権は患者さんにあることを伝える、やさしいひと言です。

スクリプト:
Pharmacist (Female): Good morning, Mr. Brown. I have your blood pressure medicine ready. By the way, would you like to try the generic version this time?
Patient (Male): Generic? Hmm… What’s the difference between them?
Pharmacist: Good question. The generic medicine has the same active ingredient as the brand-name one, so it works in the same way. The main difference is the price.
Patient: I see. So, is it as effective as the original one?
Pharmacist: Yes. Generic medicines are approved only after they are confirmed to be equivalent to the original. They are less expensive because the development cost is lower.
Patient: That sounds good. How much can I save?
Pharmacist: With this prescription, it will be about 400 yen cheaper per month.
Patient: Oh, that adds up over a year. Does it look exactly the same?
Pharmacist: Actually, the shape and the color may be a little different, and the name on the package will change too. But please don’t worry — it’s the same medicine.
Patient: Got it. Okay, let’s go with the generic, then.
Pharmacist: Certainly. I’ll prepare it right away. If anything feels different, please let us know anytime.

良いご質問ですね。ジェネリック医薬品は先発医薬品と同じ有効成分が入っているので、同じように効きます。主な違いはお値段です。
Patient:
I see. So, is it as effective as the original one?
なるほど。じゃあ、先発品と同じくらい効くんですか？
Pharmacist:
Yes. Generic medicines are approved only after they are confirmed to be equivalent to the original. They are less expensive because the development cost is lower.
はい。ジェネリック医薬品は、先発品と同等であることが確認されてから承認されます。開発コストが低いので、その分お安くなっているんです。
Patient:

🗣️ 重要表現と文法のポイント
Would you like to ~?：「〜されますか？」。“Do you want ~?” よりずっと丁寧で、接客の基本形です。
The same A as B：「Bと同じA」。“the same active ingredient as the brand-name one” のように使います。as を忘れやすいので注意！
as ~ as …：「…と同じくらい〜」。“as effective as the original” で「先発品と同じくらい効く」。
Cost less / less expensive：「より安い」。“cheap” は品質が低い印象になりがちなので、お薬の説明ではこちらが安心です。
May be a little different：「少し違うかもしれません」。may を使うと断定を避けたやわらかい表現になります。
Let’s go with ~：「〜にします」。患者さんが選択を決めるときの自然な言い方です。

📌 ワンポイント
海外では “generic” という言葉自体は広く知られていますが、制度や自己負担の仕組みは国によって大きく違います。
“You can change back anytime.”（いつでも元のお薬に戻せますよ）
と添えてあげると、患者さんはぐっと決めやすくなります。
「安いから」ではなく「同じ成分で、負担が軽くなるから」という順番で伝えるのがコツですよ😊
